During apartheid, Afrikaans and English were the two official languages, aiming for all white South Africans to become bilingual in these languages. Bilingual education was implemented in different ways. Webbriefly outlines a process underway in South Africa to develop a framework for a national language policy, whilst the final section looks at the implica-tions of this for education, the area where the author is located. Officially, South Africa has eleven official languages and promotes a policy of multilingualism.
