The sensor works on an infrared basis, which certainly can be implemented with a camera that is capable of resolving traffic signs and cars. When the headlights are in "auto" mode a sensor on the dash determines when it's dark enough for the headlights to be on. When it thinks it's dark, the lights are on. When it thinks it's daytinme, it turns off the lights.

I think people will be less confused once more vehicles are on the road with new headlight locations. Although flashing is tedious (in most cases lol) the other drives are usually trying to help.
